What is the Kgolo Trust?
Kgolo Trust aims to develop and support media and journalism projects or initiatives that serve previously disadvantaged individuals and groups in South Africa.
The trust does so through:
- Bursaries
- Supporting new or existing projects related to media development
- Supporting the development of women in media
Who can apply for Kgolo Trust assistance?
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens;
- Be involved in media development;
- Be previously disadvantaged; or,
- Have a project that targets media development among previously disadvantaged persons;
How can I apply for Kgolo Trust assistance?
Applicants must submit a full proposal with supporting documentation. These applications are considered on a quarterly-basis. All applications must include a motivation regarding the applicant's impact on previously disadvantaged communities, the sustainability of the project and project's potential contribution to developing media in South Africa. Applicants are considered by the Kgolo Trust Board. If necessary, an interview process will be set up. Notwithstanding the basic criteria outlined above, the board's final decision will be based on the long-term impact the project will have on media development. Where does Kgolo get its money?
Kgolo invests in media-related business. It is the largest shareholder in the Internet publishing company BIG Media and is presently considering other media outlets. Kgolo appoints two of the four directors on the board of BIG Media.
